“Love deeper and laugh harder than you ever thought possible. Never settle for anything less.”

When I first started Deal Breakers, I thought it would disappoint me. The writing style didn’t dazzle me on the first try. But never judge a book by its first chapter. That’s what they say right? Well, I’m so glad I didn’t, because Deal Breakers turned out to be a great read.

The book is written from two perspectives: Riley’s and Devyn’s. The first couple of chapters describe the first four years (the years of their growing friendship, in college). I think it took up 35% of the book. The rest of the book covers the years five years after college.

Riley is a notorious man whore, but he’s immediately captured by Devyn from the first moment he sees her. One problem, Devyn is not looking for a boyfriend or hook-up, only a friend. She friend-zones him and that’s the start of a very strong friendship between the two. And all the awkward moments that happen in those four years of college are forgotten and ignored.

“Promise me that you’ll never settle, Devyn. Never sell yourself short and settle for someone out of comfort or obligation. Make sure that when you do settle down one day it’s with someone who knows your worth and makes you feel everything you’re supposed to feel with the person you spend the rest of your life with.”

Deal Breakers Quote 1

Before graduation Devyn decided she wants to lose her V-card and that Riley is the best man for the job. It helps that the chemistry is already there. I love how Riley tries his best to make it a day and night for Devyn to remember. He doesn’t only offer her sex, but he makes it special: drinks, watching her favorite movie, hot chocolate. I swooned while reading these scenes, because it was just so cute. Oh and the sex, that was so hot! Even though Devyn is one of the guys (she likes sport, drinks beer and plays pool), she is still a girl and an uncertain one at that. She’s especially uncertain about her body, scared that she’s not good enough. Riley isn’t even attracted to her, or so she thinks. After a night full of passion, she realizes how much she loves Riley, and not just in a friendship kind of way. Too bad for her, Riley has big commitment issues. And that was the last time she saw him, spoke to him and heard from him. Until five years later…

“Fine. Go ahead and lie to yourself it if it makes you feel better. […] But Devyn, you and I both know that won’t last long. You need to think long and hard about what you’re going to do about it. I think you know me well enough to know where I stand on the subject. And if there’s any confusion, I’d be happy to clear it up. Just say the word.”

A chance encounter has them meeting again after five years. I love Devyn’s brother. He really cares about her and he’ll do everything he can to help and protect her. And Riley knows how big of a mistake he made all those years ago, he wants Devyn back. Two problems: she has a huge secret and a boyfriend. When he finds out about her secret, he’s devastated and I felt so sorry for him. But after he gets over his anger, he handled everything perfectly. You could see Riley and Devyn were made for each other. The only person left to see that was Devyn herself.

“Go Riley! I’m not this girl. You can’t just go around saying things like that, kissing anyone you please.”

Deal Breakers Quote 2

And Riley gives her the space to figure it all out, even though it’s hard for him. He wanted her and he was jealous of seeing her with her boyfriend. Which is natural, because who wouldn’t. But he was so sweet. Yes, sometimes he didn’t know how to deal with everything and that made him react in a wrong way, but he did his best. He was there for Riley and knew how to say all the right things at the perfect moment.

Riley and Devyn’s love story wasn’t a simple friends-turn-lovers story. It was a difficult one, because they both didn’t know how to deal with all the feelings they had for each other. They wreck their friendship with trying, but their connection is strong enough to find their way back to each other. You just have to read Deal Breakers to find out if their connection is strong enough for them to be a couple.

I couldn’t stop reading Deal Breakers. I immediately fell in love with Riley and Devyn. Their witty banter was just so cute. I loved their connection and the sparks that were flying between them. I was also totally in love with the end. And, I’m so happy that Drew and Brody both will get their own stories. Deal Breakers contains a great, difficult love story and I can’t wait for its sequels. It’s an absolute must-read!

“She fucking radiates goodness, compassion, love, and this sexiness that she doesn’t seem to be aware of, but it’s inherently a part of her. She challenges me like no other. She keeps me grounded. She makes me want to be the best version of myself. I know that I’d be an entirely different man without her in my life.”
