Friday Book Beginnings and The Friday 56: UNWANTED GIRL by MK Schiller

It’s Friday and that means it’s time for these two weekly Friday-features: Friday Book Beginnings and The Friday 56. Friday Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and in this weakly meme you share the first (or two) sentences from the book you’re currently reading. I’m combining it with the meme The Friday 56, hosted by Freda’s Voice, because they overlap. In this feature you share a teaser from page 56 (or 56% in your reader) of the book you’re reading. One of the books I’m currently reading is Unwanted Girl by MK Schiller. It’s my first read from the author and it released on January 19. I’ll first share the blurb and a link to Goodreads, so you can add it to your TBR-list.

When a man loves a woman.
Recovering addict Nick Dorsey finds solace in his regimented life. That is until he meets Shyla Metha. Something about the shy Indian beauty who delivers take-out to his Greenwich Village loft inspires the reclusive writer. And when Shyla reveals her desire to write a book of her own, he agrees to help her. The tale of a young Indian girl growing up against a landscape of brutal choices isn’t Nick’s usual territory, but something about the story, and the beautiful storyteller, draws him in deep.
Shyla is drawn to Nick, but she never imagines falling for him. Like Nick, Shyla hails from a village, too… a rural village in India. They have nothing in common, yet he makes her feel alive for the first time in her life. She is not ready for their journey to end, but the plans she’s made cannot be broken… not even for him. Can they find a way to rewrite the next chapter?

“Nick Dorsey ran every morning, although he no longer ventured to guess whether he was chasing dreams or fleeing demons. As he exited the brick building on Bleecker to a grim, grayish sky, the promise of another sunless day revealed itself.”

I think this is the perfect example of Schiller’s writing style. It’s the same throughout the rest of the book. I can say I’m pretty good in English, even though I’m not a native speaker, but there are words in this book I have to look up in a dictionary. Not necessarily to understand what the sentences are about, but I just can’t read anything that I don’t completely understand. So I have to look it up to keep reading. That’s the only problem I have with the book right now.

“She cleared her throat and continued the story. He hung onto her every word, wrapped in the trance of her rich, seductive voice.”

This is an excerpt from the 56th page. I think this is where Nick and Shyla are working together on her story. I don’t exactly know, because I’m still in the second chapter.

What book are you currently reading? And what is your Book Beginning and/or Friday 56?
