4 SUGAR DADDY STARS (★★★★)

I’m going to make Jonathan Townsend pay for what he did to me.

I read Sawyer’s Off series in two breaths. It was just so good I couldn’t stop reading. That’s how I came in contact and fell in love with Sawyer Bennett’s writing. Not so much of a surprise what I did when I found it she was starting a new series. I started jumping up and down and waited until I finally had the chance to read Sugar Daddy. And the moment I saw that beautiful cover, I was sold. It might not have been what she normally writes, but I loved it nonetheless.

And so for the first time in my life, I’m doing something that is completely unlike anything Beck North has ever done before. I’m exploring something deeper with one woman. This woman to be exact.

Sela was brutalized in the most horrible way you could imagine. When she finally gets a clue as to who her attacker was, she’s on the road to revenge. This confident, but damaged young woman, goes all in. The person she initially targets, doesn’t take the bait. But just when she things it will all go to hell, her eyes land on Beck. Friend of JT, the dirtbag, and co-owner of The Sugar Bowl. A sort of dating site meant for very rich older man and young women looking for anything those Sugar Daddies have to offer.

Beck has been friends with JT since forever, but seems to finally see how bad of a guy he really is, until he doesn’t, because JT knows how to manipulate. Beck doesn’t do relationships, but does profit from the Sugar Babies with one-night stands. He loves his indepedence too much. A perfect way in for Sela. But that’s when things get complicated, because after they sign a contract, they both didn’t expect the feelings that start to arise. Feelings that bounds the two of them. Can Beck give up his independency and is Sela ready to forget about her avenging plans?

A rare, genuine, full smile from Sela with nothing else hidden underneath. It captivates me and everything else in the room melts away.

It wasn’t difficult to start this book. Not at all. From the very first page I was hooked. Even with all the things I have to do for school: learning and working at my bachelorthesis. Reading Sugar Daddy gave me the perfect opportunity for some distraction at times. However, school did cause me to take my time with this book, but that was okay. You’re not always in a position to read a book a day, right? 

All characters in this book felt real to me. Job well done, Sawyer. I liked both Sela and Beck and understood why they did the things they did. I got the reason for Sela’s revenge plans, but I did find her ultimate goal a little bit extreme and not very realistic. The decisions Beck made, were also logical. I hated how JT knew how to manipulate him by using Beck’s one weakness. The bond that exists between them, the friendship of so many years. It’s also why I really don’t like JT, there’s not one bone of friendliness in him. He’s just 100% slimy and creepy. 

Details. I mean, they were kind of given, but could’ve been described more thoroughly. But you what? It’s for the best. It made the novel a heck of a lot lighter than I expected it to be. It had a dark edge, but it wasn’t as dark as it could’ve been. Sugar Daddy felt more light and bubbly. 

I also liked the uniqueness of the plot of Sugar Daddy. There are not many books that describe revenge at all or specificly revenge through using other people and then ‘falling in love’. The only thing that lost points for me was the amount of sex in Sugar Daddy. Don’t get me wrong, I like my books to have some sexy and steamy in them, but in this novel it was kind of overkill. I think maybe 50% of this book was sex, it wasn’t a supporting element anymore. Sometimes it took over the whole story. And that was just too bad. 

Sawyer’s writing. It was good. It just wasn’t what I exped from her. I liked it, I just wasn’t totally gripped by it. Sometimes, I read a book not only for its premise, but also because of the exceptional writing. With Sugar Daddy the story itself was my main reason to keep reading, but it was the engagement, caused by Sawyer’s writing, that facilitated it. So I she did a good job at that. It was engaging and it made you feel every emotion: the anger from Sela, sadness for Beck because he’s being used and utter displeasure for JT. 

Don’t get me started on that cliffhanger… WHY?! I was totally into the story and then it just stopped at the most intense turning point ever. I think I screamed very loud with frustration. I kind off expected what happened, but I didn’t know it was going to be a cliffhanger. Now I have to wait for Sela and Beck’s story to continue in August. I really don’t know how I’m going to do that..

Sugar Daddy entails a romance with an edge. For Sela it’s about revenge for the most horrible thing that could ever happen to you. She tries to protect herself by keeping a strong wall up. Suddenly, she finds out she’s not as damaged as she thought. Both Sela and Beck both find a kind off warmth and comfort when they least expected to by leaving their comfort zone. Until secrets destroy everything. Sugar Daddy is dirty and sexy, but also very sweet! 

“I may have grown up in a monstrosity of a house, but it wasn’t ever a home. Our condo… that’s more of a home to me than I’ve ever lived in, and part of that is because you’re there.”
